A condom is a barrier device used during sexual intercourse to reduce the chances of pregnancy and spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

A condom is a thin sheath made from latex, plastic or lambskin that covers the penis during intercourse. A man’s semen is collected in it so that it does not enter the vagina. A female condom is also available and is made of polyurethane.

Some condoms are lubricated while some others are devoid of any lubrication. Water-based lubricants, oil-based lubricants and silicone based-lubricants are most commonly used. The main aim of lubrication is to enable easy insertion of the condom, minimizing the chance of rupture and maximizing comfort. Some condoms are coated with nonoxnol 9 for spermicidal effect.

Condoms must be used consistently and correctly to get maximum protection. Consistent use means using a condom from start to finish of each act of intercourse. Condoms are recommended every time for vaginal, anal or oral sex. Each condom is for single use only.

Condoms are the most effective way of contraception and to reduce the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

However, if used incorrectly it can lead to failure of contraception due to breakage or leakage.
