Glossary

AIDS - An infection due to HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) that severely damages the immune system.

Birth control - The regulation of the number of children born, referring either to the prevention of pregnancy (by birth control pill, sterilisation, etc) or the prevention of birth (by abortion, etc).

Condoms - A sheath that fits over an erect penis to catch semen during ejaculation.

Contraception - Birth control; deliberate prevention of the conception of offspring by any of various means.

Ejaculation - The release of semen through the penis during orgasm.

Foreskin - The fold of skin which covers the head of a penis.

HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus; the virus that is responsible for causing AIDS.

Infection - Invasion of the body by agents (bacteria, viruses or fungi) that cause disease or tissue damage.

Latex - Milky juice produced by plants.

Lubricants - Oily or slippery substances.

Penis - Male organ for urination and sexual intercourse.

Sperm - Male reproductive cells produced by the testes and transported in the semen; spermatozoa.

Spermicides - Agents that kill sperm by contact.

STD - Sexually Transmitted Disease.

Syphilis - A sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria which invade the blood through broken tissue linings in the sex organs, rectum, or mouth. It can be treated with antibiotics.

Vagina -The passage (birth canal) connecting the female external genitalia with the uterus.
