The symptoms can be unpredictable and no two patients will have the same symptoms. Each individual patient’s symptoms can change from time to time.

Multiple Sclerosis signs and symptoms can be very variable depending on the nerve fibers affected by the disease.

  • The early symptoms of multiple sclerosis can be very mild and non-specific such as fatigue and weakness.
  • It can manifest as numbness of a particular area of the body, or as problems in balancing and walking.
  • Difficulty in walking and sometimes the disability can lead to being confined to a wheel chair
  • There may be urinary bladder dysfunction – like frequency and urgency
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Bowel dysfunction
  • Dizziness and vertigo
  • Blurred vision, double vision, or even emotional problems and cognitive dysfunction.

Less common symptoms are

  • Difficulty in speech
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Hearing loss
  • Seizures
  • Tremors
  • Breathing problems

Other manifestations include

  • Atrophy or wasting of muscles due to lack of usage
  • Pressure sores due to being bedridden
  • Increased tendency to fractures
