The causes maybe categorized into two types:

Congenital causes

  • Poor development of the spinal cord of the baby, while inside the mother's uterus.
  •  Poor development or absence of the bones of the spine (vertebrae)
  • Fusing of the spinal bones with one another.
  • Spinal cord diseases like spina - bifida.

Acquired causes

  •  Poor posture
  • Injury
  •  Osteoporosis
  • Degenerative diseases of bones of the spine
  • Infections like Tuberculosis of the spine
  •  Degeneration of the cushion- like discs of the spinal bones
