Complications of Gaucher’s disease

Complications of Gaucher’s disease

Bone pain, bleeding tendency, and increases risk of certain cancers are complications common to all types of Gaucher’s disease.

Bone pain can be associated with fractures. The pain may be of severe grade.

Increased tendency to bleed: There can be repeated bleeds in the nostrils or nasal cavities. Bruising in the skin, called ecchymosis can also result.

Older patients have an increased risk of certain cancers like multiple myeloma (uncontrolled proliferation of plasma cells). Type 2 Gaucher’s disease may cause neurological complications like:

  • Seizures
  • Difficulty walking
  • Swallowing problems

Type 3 Gaucher’s disease can damage heart valves by causing calcification (deposition of calcium).
