Glossary

Ischemia: Localized tissue anemia due to obstruction of the inflow of arterial blood (as by the narrowing of arteries by spasm or disease).

b>Infarction: Localized necrosis resulting from obstruction of the blood supply.

Thrombosis: The formation or presence of a thrombus (a clot of coagulated blood attached at the site of its formation) in a blood vessel.

Perfusion: The act of injecting fluid into a blood vessel to supply nutrients and oxygen.

Hemodynamics: The forces involved during circulation of the blood.

Plaque: Abnormal patch of fatty materials, platelets and/or calcium deposited in the inner layer of blood vessels.

Viable: Capacity to live and grow.

Spirometry: An instrument used to measure the lung’s capacity.

Ligation: Tying up a bleeding artery or vein with sutures.

Aorta: The main artery of the circulatory system, arising from the left ventricle of the heart carrying oxygenated blood to all the arteries of the body except those of the lungs.

Anastomosis: Connection made surgically between two separate organs.

Emboli: A detached thrombus or air bubble traveling and obstructing another blood vessel.
