About

Gastroschisis is a condition where the baby has a small hole in the front of the abdomen, just to the side of the umbilical cord, through which some of the bowel (intestine) is protruding.

This bowel is easily visible on the ultrasound scan. This is a rare problem, which occurs in around one in every 3000 births.
