Glossary

Antibiotics - A drug used to treat infections caused by bacteria and other microorganisms.

Astigmatism - An eye condition in which the lens doesn't focus light evenly on the retina, leading to problems with visual sharpness.

Contact Lens - Lenses which fit directly on the eyeball under the eyelids.

Cornea - The clear tissue in front of the eye resembling a crystal of a watch.

Hyperopia - Long-sightedness. Objects in the distance are relatively clearer than objects close up which are relatively more blurred, (opposite of short sight).

LASER - Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation; A low wattage laser is used as a light pointer and in toys. A high wattage laser can vaporize tissue.

LASER Treatment - Using a special strong beam of light of one color (laser) to heal a damaged area. A person with diabetes might be treated with a laser beam to heal blood vessels in the eye.

LASIK - Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.

Myopia - Short-sightedness. The ability see near objects more clearly than those at a distance.

Ophthalmologist - A physician who is qualified and especially trained to diagnose and treat all eye and visual system problems, as well as diagnose general diseases of the body.
