What are Vital Organs?
Humans have five important vital organs that are essential for survival.
It is important to take care of the vital organs for a healthy living.
The heart is a muscular organ and by far the most important organ in our body, which helps to pump pure oxygenated blood to different parts of the body. It receives the impure deoxygenated blood from the body and sends it to the lungs for the oxygenation.
Tips to protect your heart:
- Doing moderate exercise regularly is good for heart health. Avoid sedentary life. Maintain an ideal weight.
- Avoid smoking cigarettes.
- Monitor your blood lipid levels regularly because an increase in LDL cholesterol is associated with increased incidence of the cardiovascular disease.
- Manage the blood pressure and sugar levels by taking necessary treatment.
- Consume fruits, green leafy vegetables and foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids.
The brain is as important as the heart. It is a complicated organ, which is located within the skull. It is the organ that controls and coordinates signals between other organs through the central nervous system. It allows us to think, feel, learn & retain memories. If your brain is dead, there is no way to have a brain transplant. So, keep your brain young and healthy.
Tips to protect your brain:
- Adequate sleep is essential. It helps to improve the mood and reduces the beta amyloid protein deposition in the brain which causes Alzheimerís disease.
- Meditation and yoga are useful for the mental health, as they help to relieve stress.
- Stay connected to friends and family. An active social life helps slow memory loss.
Kidneys, are bean-shaped organs located at the back of the abdomen, one on each side of the spine. The kidneys filter the blood and remove the wastes from the blood along with water to produce urine.
Tips to protect your kidneys:
- Drink adequate water and hydrate your body.
- Manage the blood pressure and sugar levels, as uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes can damage the kidneys.
- Avoid smoking cigarettes, as they can injure the blood vessels of the kidneys and lead to renal pathology. It is also associated with renal carcinoma and hypertension.
- Take pain medications like NSAIDs cautiously, as they can be associated with renal risk.
- Limit the sodium intake and have a healthy diet.
The lungs are the spongy air-filled organs located on either side of the chest cavity and are protected by rib cage. Lungs are the primary organs of respiration. Lungs receive deoxygenated blood from the heart. The lungs oxygenate the blood and send the oxygenated blood to the heart.
Tips to protect your lung:
- Avoid smoking cigarettes. Smoking is associated with lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
- Avoid exposure to air pollutants and allergens.
- To prevent infections wash your hands with soap and water. Avoid crowded places during the flu season. When you get sick take precautions not to transmit to others.
- Aerobic exercise is good for the lung health, it improves the lung function.
The liver is an important and the largest internal organ, located in the upper right portion of your abdominal cavity, beneath the diaphragm and on top of the stomach. The liver plays a vital role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, drugs and toxins. It is the only organ that can completely regenerate.
Tips to protect your liver:
- Eat a healthy and balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, cereals, nuts and fiber.
- Avoid drinking alcohol; it has very bad effects on the liver. It can cause liver cirrhosis and liver failure.
- Use the medications according to the physicianís recommendation.
Skin is the largest organ. It is the soft outer tissue, that forms a natural outer covering of the body. The skin protects the body, as well as, maintains the body temperature.
Tips to protect your skin:
- Protect the skin from the sun by using sunscreens and by avoiding the sun.
- Moisturize the skin.
- Avoid smoking cigarettes, smoking can cause wrinkling of the skin and aging.
- Do not use strong soaps while bathing.
- Vitamin C and E are good for skin.
- Consume fruits and vegetables.
- Avoid fatty and processed foods.
Eyes are very important to see the world around you. The eye is an organ of the visual system, which reacts to light and enables us to differentiate between colors.
Tips to protect your eyes:
- Foods rich in vitamin A are healthy for eyes.
- Eat fruits and green leafy vegetables.
- Wear protective shades while driving or playing sports.
- Maintain your blood pressure and sugar levels. Hypertension and diabetes can cause ill effects on the eye.
- Avoid smoking.
- If you use contact lens, wash your hands with soap and water before wearing lens.
- If you work on the computer for long hours try to relax your eyes regularly. Try 20-20-20 rule, for every 20 minutes of work on the computer, take a break for 20 seconds during which you see the things at 20 feet distance. It helps to reduce the strain on the eyes.
Intestines are vital organs in the digestive systems. It is a long, winding, muscular tube extends from the stomach to the anus. Intestines help to absorb the nutrients from the consumed food.
There are two types of intestines:
- Handles the middle part of the digestion process
- Absorbs nutrients and minerals from food
- Converts food into feces
- Absorbs essential vitamins produced by gut bacteria
- Reclaim water from feces
Tips to protect the intestine:
- Eat fruits and vegetables.
- Eat food rich in fiber.
- Avoid processed foods, fatty foods, concentrated sweets and animal fats.
- Eat plant proteins.
- Add probiotics like curd to your diet.
