Paralysis

Prevention of Paralysis

How can you Prevent Paralysis?

Paralysis generally cannot be prevented, especially if it arises as a result of a disease process that is beyond control. However, in certain cases like spinal cord injury, paralysis can potentially be prevented by taking proper precautions. These are briefly highlighted below:

  • A seat belt should always be worn while driving or riding a motor vehicle.
  • A motor vehicle should never be operated under the influence of alcohol.
  • All distractions must be avoided while driving. For example, mobile phones should never be used.
  • Slips and falls frequently occur at home. Therefore, the home should be kept clean and clutter free. The floors, especially of bathrooms and toilets, should never be slippery and kept as clean as possible to avoid any falls. Falls can be especially serious for the elderly.
  • Extreme sports must be avoided. These include sky-diving, bungee jumping, and base jumping as these are very dangerous. Horse riding is also dangerous and should be done under an experienced trainer.
  • Helmets should always be worn for sports that can lead to head injury. These include cricket, American football, cycling, dirt biking, and Formula One racing, to name a few.
  • Playground and swimming pool safety measures must be adopted to avoid accidents, particularly in children.
