Younger Generation Feels Lonely Due to New Technologies

A new survey carried out by Britain's Mental Health Foundation has revealed that instead of the elderly, it is the younger generation that is feeling more lonely.

According to the report while around 10 percent of the general population is lonely, the number jumps to more than 60 percent in the age group of 18 to 34 years compared to 35 percent among people older than 55 years of age. More than 2,256 people participated in the survey.

The report added that the feeling of loneliness differed among the sexes with more women than men admitted to feeling lonely. The report also blamed new technologies including social networking websites with more than 30 percent of younger generation admitting that they spend more time online.

"Our stereotype of the older person, home alone is challenged by information showing the number of children calling a helpline who are lonely has increased by 60% in five years", Peter Byrne, associate registrar of the Royal College of Psychiatrists said.
