According to recent statistics, Wythenshawe Hospital’s cardiac care team has exceeded expectations, with a 98% survival rate for heart surgeries. Nearly 3000 operations were conducted in the heart centre between March 2004 and 2007.
According to the hospital’s surgeon Ben Bridgewater, enabling data on the performance of each doctor and heart centre has reflected in a 40% improvement of cardiac care in Britain. Happy with the results he said, "We are very pleased to have achieved better than expected results for the last two years. It is only possible to achieve consistently good quality with a very good team - you have to get every aspect of care right. Now we focus on trying to eliminate any problems and picking up any issues as early as possible and dealing with them in the best way possible."Nearly 2.6m people in Britain suffer heart disease out of which 35,000 have undergone surgeries during the past year.
Information about the functioning of 37 heart units in the country is available on the website of the healthcare commission, which will be a confidence booster to patients about successful heart surgeries. While 32 units met expectations, no heart centre was found substandard.
Prof Sir Ian Kennedy, chairman of the Healthcare Commission, said: "Making this information available has increased patients' confidence in heart surgeons. It is a fine example for other surgical specialties to follow."
