Wrong HIV Diagnosis Results in Two Transfers

by Rajashri on May 22 2009 9:00 PM

Lab technician Sheetal Salve and counsellor Raju Chourey, who were held responsible after a wrong HIV diagnosis resulted in a miscarriage at the MW Desai Hospital at Malad have been transferred.

The error occurred on the report of 24-year-old Firdos Sagar, who had arrived at the hospital allegedly wanting to abort her third child. After a positive report following routine HIV testing, Firdos and her husband Nazim, went to Cooper hospital and another private one where it was found that she was not carrying the virus.

Nazim alleged that the two weeks of stress caused a miscarriage. The Mumbai District Aids Control Society (MDACS) carried out an inquiry and found gross negligence among the staffers.

"It could also be a case of wrong labelling as all the three HIV tests came positive," said Dr SS Kudalkar, project director, MDACS. "But the ICTC staffers were found to be highly negligent in their work. We will also issue a warning to the technician who collected the sample as the mistake could be at that end also."
