World Heart Day 2011 – Glenmark’s Doctor-Patient Rally, Awareness Seminar in Chennai
Glenmark, the global, integrated pharmaceutical company conducted a Doctor-Patient Rally and Awareness Seminar on Saturday, 24 September, in Chennai, South India to commemorate World Heart Day  2011.
The rally with more than 2000 participants started around 6.00 am from Gandhi Statue, Marina Beach in Chennai and ended at Venkateswara Hospital. The rally aimed to create community awareness on the risk features for heart diseases, preventive measures to be adopted and ways to improve the quality of life of sufferers. The Rally was followed by a Seminar on preventive measures to combat hypertension. Noted cardiologist, Dr Thillai Vallal addressed the gathering at Venkateswara Hospital. Mr. Shailesh Babu, Police commissioner of Chennai, was the chief guest for the World Heart Day 2011 Rally.

Heart diseases claim about 17.5 millions lives every year. The seminar traced the poor socio-economic conditions that lead to poor hygienic living conditions in many places in India. Overcrowding, poor ventilation and bad sanitation often lead to stress and tension which in turn cause heart diseases.  Doctors speaking at the Seminar tried to bust the myth among people that all cardiac procedures are expensive.

Dr. Thillai Vallal, Cardiologist observed, “Most people spend about 60 percent of their waking hours at work, so healthy choices at the workplace are critical for overall wellness. A diet low in saturated fat and rich in fruits and vegetables combined with regular physical activity can lower the risks of heart diseases. So choose your foods and fats like you choose your friends- think quality, not just quantity.”

Glenmark is organizing similar activities in about 10 cities across India, apart from Chennai, to mark World Heart Day 2011.
