Women Trafficking on the Rise in Northeast Region in India

Trafficking in women has reportedly increased in the northeastern region and unscrupulous agents have been trap innocent girls promising them jobs.

Girls from poor economic background are easily trapped into the thriving flesh trade.

According to Non- Governmental Organizations (NGO), these agents are very active in the region and always on the lookout for such girls whom they can easily lure into the trade.

Global Organization for Life Development (GOLD), an organisation working for upliftment of sex workers has stated that of late there has been a rampant rise in the number of young girls entering the flesh trade.

"Actually brokers are very active in this area. At the time of floods and famine, they start their work. Every month many girls are going to other states," said Kaveri Sharma, Assistant General Secretary, Global Organization for Life Development.

Due to lack of education, unemployment, and ignorance the girls are being forced into sex trade.

After rescuing some of them from the clutches of flesh traders, voluntary organization are working to rehabilitate them.

These sex workers are being trained in various skills by the NGOs.

"I’ve learnt cutting and various other skills here. I’m trying to become self sufficient to support my child," said Anita, a rescued sex worker.

A recent study by GOLD has revealed that around 20 percent of these girls in the age group of 12-18 years’ are forced into prostitution, as there is an increasing demand for them.

The NGO also said that there has been a five percent rise in children taking to sex work over last year.

Almost half of the child prostitutes were from Assam, followed by Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.
