Women Make Better Bosses Than Men?

A woman’s efforts to further her career prospects are often ruined by her boss – a woman, reveals a study undertaken by psychologists at the University of Cincinnati. Women who have successfully competed with men to reach the top are less inclined to help other women in their struggle. In fact the study shows that women bosses extend their support and mentoring to men more readily, than they do to women.

Earlier studies had established that the Queen Bee syndrome does not tolerate any threat of competition. This recent study discloses that female bosses were more likely to impede other women’s climb up the corporate ladder.

Researchers hypothesize that a desire to be on par with their male colleagues may lead to women in managerial positions to give more support to male workers than females.

David Maume of the research team commented that contrary to popular opinion that women make better bosses because of their supportive and fostering nature,  expecting female bosses to change the nature of superior-subordinate relations for the good will lead to disappointment.

An interesting study in 2008 by German researchers revealed that women who had a female supervisor suffered more depression, insomnia, headaches and heartburn.

And a British survey last year found two-thirds of women preferred a male boss.

So, women do not make better bosses. For other women, at least!
