The number of women driving under the influence of alcohol in the United States is rising fast, according to data released Thursday by the FBI, which said the trend was alarming.
"Impaired driving is an issue that cuts across all segments of society and sadly, the number of arrests of women under the influence is on the rise," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "This is clearly a very disturbing trend."

A parallel study found that women drivers under the influence were responsible for some 2,000 highway deaths each year out of 12,000 deaths in which alcohol was a factor.
