Women Being Actively Recruited as Firefighters

by Rajashri on Jul 7 2008 2:17 PM

The fire and rescue service in Lancashire is staging a special event to encourage women to take up firefighting as a career.

Currently there are just 26 women in the firefighting department compared to 1,272 men. This special event is to take place at Euxton, Chorley on Friday.

Firefighters will demonstrate a variety of operational rescue scenarios like extinguishing fires in industrial and domestic settings during the sessions with most of the firefighters giving the demos expected to be women.

"We know that there are women who would make exceptionally capable firefighters who aren't at present considering it as a career," said Lancashire's Chief Fire Officer, Peter Holland. "Though they are missing out on an outstanding career option, we are missing out on the ability they could bring to the role."
