Woman Dies as Ambulance Gets Stuck in Queue
A 73-year old great grandmother died after the ambulance carrying her to the hospital was stuck in a traffic jam for at least an hour outside the hospital.
Sonia Powell suffered a suspected heart attack and was being carried to the Morriston Hospital’s Accident & Emergency Unit, in Swansea, from Neath Port Talbot Hospital. The ambulance that was carrying her got stuck in a tailback of 15 ambulances, with the family claiming that the wait was for at least an hour while hospital authorities said that it was for 40 minutes.

Mrs Powell’s family also alleged that the doctors were not aware why she was being transferred to the hospital, with one doctor reportedly coming out and saying that there was nothing more that the staff at Morriston Hospital could do that was not done at the Neath Port Talbot Hospital.

Her daughter, Colleen Lewis said that she saw less urgent cases being tended to first, with a bad arm and a cut to the head being given more preference than a heart attack case. The family has demanded an apology, claiming that she should have died on a bed rather than at the back of an ambulance.

“The doctor came and apologized but my mother should have died in a bed not in the back of an ambulance. There were less urgent cases going in ahead of my mother. I saw one person with a bad arm and another with a cut to the head while two police officers took somebody else in”, Ms Lewis said.
