Winona Ryder’s Arrest Got Her Rid of Drug Dependence

by VR Sreeraman on Jul 20 2007 3:29 PM

Actress Winona Ryder says that the notorious incident of her arrest for shoplifting from a Saks Fifth Avenue store in December 2001 somehow worked as a blessing for her because it got rid of her dependence on drugs.

This is the first time she has talked about her arrest, an incident that got a lot of media attention across the world.

Ryder revealed that just before her arrest, she got hooked to some painkillers that a quack had administered to her to ebb her sufferings from an injury on her arm.

"Two months prior to that, I broke my arm in two places, and the doctor, a sort of quack doctor, was giving me a lot of stuff and I was taking it at first to get through the pain. And then there was this weird point when you don't know if you are in pain but you're taking it," she said.

But Ryder, who moved to San Fransisco to live near her parents and decided not to work after settling her court issues, stopped taking the painkillers after her arrest.

"No one ever got angry with me. Concerned, yes, but not concerned with a drug problem or anything. Because after that night I pretty much didn't ever. ... If you are ever arrested, you can't ever do that again," she said.

The actress, however, admitted that she was shocked by the hype of her arrest.

"The attention was what was embarrassing," she said.

The 35-year-old actress, who has returned to work with three new movies—The Ten, Sex and Death 101, and The Last Word—that are slated to be released this year, also revealed that she wanted to get married and start a family.

"I think I assumed I would be married and have a kid by the age I am now. It kind of occurred to me for the first time last year: I actually want to go on and have kids," she said.

Ryder said that she was looking for the right man for her.

"You know how people ask, 'Who is the love of your life?' God, I hope I haven't met that person yet, in a way, because I'm single. I hope I haven't had that, since that would be sad," she said.
