French researchers have come up with a reason why men tend to sleep soon after sex while women are forced to stay up for a long time. Researchers led by Serge Stoleru, who is head of the French medical research council Inserm, scanned the brains of men during and after sexual intercourse and found that the entire cerebral cortex shuts down soon after reaching an orgasm following which all of the sexual desire is deactivated by two other regions of the brain, cingulate cortex and amygdala. On the other hand in women, the system for calming down the body, also known as the refractory period, is not so strong and hence they manage to stay awake after sex. "These experiments give us the first hints as to what happens in the brain during orgasm. For women it seems to be different", Stoleru said.
