Wenlock Government Hospital in Karnataka Gets a New Peritoneal Dialysis Unit

Kagodu Thimmappa, Karnataka legislative assembly speaker inaugurated the new peritoneal dialysis unit and hemodialysis unit at Wenlock Hospital in the presence of health and family welfare minister U T Khader.

U T Khader said, "We have started this dialysis center in order to help the poor people. Expensive dialysis makes them poorer still. But here they can undergo the procedure free of cost. We will implement all the projects one by one. We have increased the doctors' salary and thus many doctors have already applied for posts and they would be recruited soon.”

Dialysis is an artificial process for removing excess water and waste from the blood. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are the types of dialysis.

20 beneficiaries with chronic renal failure have been taken on a pilot project by the State government to perform peritoneal dialysis for a week at the Government Wenlock Hospital. The State government bears the expense of Rs. 24,000 per month included by each beneficiary.

“I had lost hope in life following problems I faced with haemodialysis. Peritoneal dialysis has given me a new lease of life. Each session of peritoneal dialysis lasts for about thirty minutes and it has to be done thrice a day,” said Praveen Kumar, a resident of Puttur.

"I am really indebted to Health Minister U.T. Khader for including me in this pilot scheme. Following peritoneal dialysis I am now spending good time with my family members. I want this scheme to reach far more beneficiaries,” said 60-year-old, Ms. Lalitha.

Pittsburgh Analysis Questions Acute Hemodialysis Treatment Use
In an analysis led by experts at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, a common approach to treating kidney failure by removing waste products from the blood did not improve survival chances for people who suddenly developed the condition.

Mr. Khader said, "state government is considering to extend peritoneal dialysis to more people with chronic renal failure. There will not be any shortfall in availability of Dialysis liquid and medicines required for the beneficiaries."
