Web is a Pastime for 53% Adults
Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project's telephonic survey has found that 53% adults between 18-29 years of age are on the internet for no real reason other than having fun.
The survey that was conducted from July 25 to August 26 among 2,260 American adults revealed that young adults use the Internet simply for the diversion it presents. 81% of all young adults in this age group reported having used the Internet for this reason at least occasionally. The amount of time people spend surfing the Web doing nothing corresponds with age. Only 27% of people aged 50-64 years and 12% of people over 65-years said they went online the previous day for no particular reason.

The report said, "Some 58% of all adults (or 74% of all online adults) say they use the Internet this way. And a third of all adults (34%) say they used the Internet that way 'yesterday' or the day before Pew Internet reached them for the survey."

This trend can be attributed to the growth of broadband Internet connections, the increased use of video on the Web and the meteoric rise of social networking.
