Warming Patients During Surgery Hastens Recovery Time

U.S. anaesthesiologists are suggesting that warming patients may be the key for reducing recovery time and lowering risk for patients during surgery.

Dr. Daniel I. Sessler of the Cleveland Clinic says that all anaesthetics interfere with body temperature regulating systems and the temperature decreases in surgical patients who are not warmed. This decrease in body temperature called hypothermia increases risk of heart attacks, myocardial events and infarction. This may prolong recovery time.

"When all the studies were evaluated together, the results clearly show that even very mild hypothermia increases blood loss and transfusion requirements by clinically important amounts,” says Sessler. This study was published in the January issue of Anaesthesiology with Sessler as the lead author.

Though the body temperature can be controlled easily at low costs, there are instances that need induction of hypothermia explains Sessler. Hence body temperature plays an important role not only in lowering risk for patients but also on the recovery time.
