Vodka Linked to High Risk of Premature Death Among Young Russian Men
One of the first things that comes to mind when one thinks about Russia is vodka but the strong drink may be responsible for the deaths of many young men in the country after a new study found that those who regularly drink vodka double their risk of suffering a premature death over the next two decades.
Researchers from Russian Cancer Research Center in Moscow and University of Oxford surveyed more than 200,000 people from Barnaul, Byisk, and Tomsk in Siberia between 1999 and 2008 and asked them about drinking habits and health.

The researchers then recorded the number of deaths during the period and the year that they died.

After cutting off people who had some sort of disease when they were asked the questions, the researchers were left with a total of 57,000 men. The researchers found that the risk of dying over the next two decades was 16 percent among men between 35 and 54 years of age who drank less than one bottle of vodka every week. However the risk rose to 20 percent among those who drank three bottles of vodka and was over 35 percent among those who drank more than three bottles in a week. The study has been published in the journal The Lancet.
