M. Arun Kumaran (23), an engineering graduate from Karur, was injured after his motorcycle was involved in an accident a couple of weeks ago. He suffered severe head injury. He was shifted to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital for further treatment after initial treatment at a local hospital.

However, scan revealed significant dysfunction of the brain. His parents were given counselling on organ donation, after being informed of Arun’s condition.

A team of doctors from the KMCH and Aravind Eye Hospitals retrieved the organs. The liver, heart, lungs and kidneys were transplanted to patients in Kovai Medical Center and Hospital. The eyes were donated to the Aravind Eye Hospitals.

Organ donation: It is the process of removing tissues or organs from a live, or recently dead, person to be used in another. In case of cadaver donation, relatives need to provide consent. In case of live donation the donor should give his consent.
