 Violence High Among University Students

A new study led by University of British Columbia researcher Elizabeth Saewyc says that many college students are a target of physical or emotional violence often triggered by drinking.

The study found that 17 per cent of men and 16 per cent of women suffered either physical or emotional violence over the last six months. The study surveyed 2,000 students who attended campus health services for routine appointments.

It was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The study found strong links between alcohol and violent behavior.

"We've known that drinking increases the risk of perpetrating violence," says Saewyc. "But in this study we found alcohol consumption puts both young men and women at higher risk of being victimized, too."

The researchers said that health systems in universities must do more than just screen for violence and must promote healthy dating among students, "There are established guidelines that recommend screening women for intimate partner violence in routine clinical care on campus, but not for men. This study shows we need the same routine screening for young men, too," says Saewyc.

The details of the study were first published online in the Journal of Adolescent Health.
