The Department of Health has announced the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, which will cover the country over the next three years. The British Society of Gastroenterology has unanimously welcomed the introduction of this program.
"Although it is starting rather later than expected, it is now official that funds are being made available for this important national programme," commented Professor Tony Morris, who is the President of the Society as well as the Director of the National Endoscopy Training Center at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Bowel cancer claims 16,000 their lives in UK each year. It is the second leading cause of death in the country. Early detection remains the only way to prevent the cancer from spreading.
