Psychologists to Get a Hike

by Medindia Content Team on Apr 9 2006 1:20 PM

The NSW president of the Rural Doctors Association, Les Woolard of Moree says that the Federal Government should be offering big financial incentives to psychologists who are prepared to work in regional areas.

According to the statistics it is seen that for every 10,000 people who live in Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong there are six psychologists but for every 10,000 people living in rural areas there is only one psychologist.

He said that part of the Federal Government's $1.8 billion mental health package will be used to expand Medicare payments to those who have been referred to a psychologist by a GP.

But there is no help to country areas because they don’t have psychologists in the rural areas.

So the president of the Rural Doctors Association said that the government should give a hike (six times) in their salary for them to go and work in the rural areas.
