According to researchers linking childhood sexual abuse and schizophrenia will further confuse patients of the mental illness. According to a research in the American Journal, half of the women admitted for psychiatric care in the study were victims of sexual abuse. The principal researcher, John Fred from Arizona University, says the figures do not prove that abuse causes schizophrenia, but it is clearly a significant factor. But World Schizophrenia Fellowship head Jim Crowe says those suffering from the disease and their families will be damaged by the study.

According to Crowe more research needs to be done to find out the true cause of schizophrenia. Fred tthought that childhood trauma can cause changes to the brain that affect its ability to handle stress. According to him some people are more likely to suffer from schizophrenia because of their genes.
