Bausch & Lomb Inc. is in the eye of a storm. Now, the company is working in conjunction with health professionals to ascertain the reason behind a strange fungus infection among contact lens wearers. This infection initially cropped up in certain parts of Asia.

Bausch & Lomb, who are producers of both contact lenses and lens solution, feels that the cause of Fusarium keratitis infections is not emanating from the product or the solution. ReNU solution apparently caused the problem amongst its users in both Hong Kong and Singapore. The company has also faced requests to remove the product from the shelves, though a spokeswoman confirmed that the testing of the solution did not show any problem .The company have also conducted detailed tests on the product, and there has been no indication that the product or the solution has caused the infection.

The negative publicity due to the alleged infection in lens has caused a slump in sales, especially in China, despite no infections reported from there. Bausch & Lomb said that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and health ministries in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, as well as eye institutes at the University of Miami and Johns Hopkins University’s are working along with the company to investigate these infections.
