Seven Seas, the producer of Cod-liver oil has removed many of its products off the shelf because of revelation that it contained dioxins, above the prescribed limits. Dioxins are usually by-products of the industrial processes, which are supposed to be obliterated by the manufacturing outfits.

According to Anna Denny, a nutrition scientist with the British Nutrition Foundation, Children best benefit , when they get Omega-3 oils from eating fish. This is because cod liver oil contains too much Vitamin A and D for a child's needs and high doses can be toxic. All the same, extensive studies are being done to suggest that fish oils improve children's concentration. It is especially beneficial for children with behavioral or learning difficulties, as conditions like autism, demand more fatty acids than normal.

However, some health experts have raised a doubt about the toxin levels in cod liver oil, that may contain pollutants and toxins which have been consumed by the fish in the sea.

An alternative to Cod liver Oil is VegEpa - in which only the Omega-3 fatty acids are extracted and filtered to maintain purity. Pregnant women should avoid taking Cod liver supplements.
