IMA against Spiritual Guru Baba Ramdev

The Indian Medical Association has been angered over Spiritual guru Baba Ramdev's views against allopathic medicine and medical practitioners.

IMA national president Ajay Kumar said he would mobilise doctors across India against Ramdev for ‘misguiding people’ about medical practitioners and allopathic medicine.

Ramdev had reportedly alleged that medical practitioners were exploiting people for money and abusing allopathic medicine. He has said that medical practitioners conduct unnecessary tests to make money.

An irked Kumar had written an open letter to doctors accusing Ramdev of misguiding people by claiming that he has been curing serious and chronic disease through yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises).

Kumar said there was no dispute over the benefits of yoga for health, but ‘Ramdev is presenting yoga like pop music’.

‘Ramdev's claim of treating serious disease like cancer through yoga is wrong because it is not scientifically proved yet.’

Challenging Ramdev to prove that his ayurvedic medicines had any scientific basis, Kumar described him as a successful yoga salesman.

‘Ramdev's medicines have not been scientifically tested before reaching the market,’ he said.

Ramdev has started a seven-day yoga training camp here from Sunday, drawing a large number of participants. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has accorded him the unprecedented status of a state guest.

Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Brinda Karat had alleged earlier this year that some ayurvedic medicines manufactured by Ramdev' pharmacy used animal and human bones.
