Kolkata: Friday night’s attack on 30 junior doctors by the relatives of a patient, who purportedly died due to medical apathy , has instigated 200 junior doctors of the Calcutta National Medical College to strike work.

The chief minister of Kolkata had sent out a request to the striking doctors to return to their work and ensure harmony in hospital campus, while also appeasing them that their demands would be positively looked into. But the doctors seem to have disregarded the chief minister’s words.

The agitating doctors don’t seem to show any sign of relenting till such time the hospital authorities take their demands seriously. Dr Pulakendu Ghosh, a house-staff at CNMC said, The authorities are yet to pay any heed to our demands and hence our agitation would continue. Junior doctors should be given a healthy working environment to be able to discharge their duties inside the hospital. All those policemen who had lathicharged innocent doctors on Friday night should also be brought to book.

Relatives of the patient who had turned violent have been arrested on the charge of assaulting the doctors. The doctors have also placed a demand that the four arrested should be given a strong punishment. A police picket has also been installed at the hospital premises to take charge of untoward incidents.
