Possible Outbreak of TB in Aberdeen

The outbreak of the disease emerged during a routine follow-up of a TB case in Aberdeen.

Six people were diagnosed with TB in Aberdeen at a mosque. But the heath officials are reassuring the public, not to worry.

Staffs at National Health Service (NHS) Grampian are trying to make contact with all those who attended Friday prayers at Aberdeen City Mosque which is the centre of the outbreak.

But the doctors say that the six patients who were diagnosed with TB have a very small chance of developing the disease.

Following a routine screening procedure doctors then found five other cases of the disease among close contacts of the patient.

NHS Grampian is offering screening to those who attended the Friday prayers at the Spital Road mosque from the beginning of July to mid-October last year.

The NHS also has put up and distributed a letter and information sheet to the worshippers stressing on the necessity for screening.

But doctors of the NHS Grampian said that long periods of close contact with the diseased patient is required to transmit the disease but occasionally cases may, for various reasons, be more infectious and outbreaks may occur. But it also added that people need not fear as the risk of developing TB is very small.
