Chicken produced in Oman is cheap, safe and nutritious

Ramzi Schumann, general manager, Sohar Poultry Company SAOG said that there is no risk in consuming poultry meat in Oman .

Oman is free from avian influenza. Experts in poultry diseases and poultry meat as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries said that there is no risk of catching bird flu from consuming poultry meat in Oman.

Dr Issam T. Kadim, an Associate Professor in Animal and Veterinary Sciences from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) said that the H5N1 virus is sensitive to heat and the temperatures used for cooking meat kills the virus.

Dr Kadim, PhD in meat science from the University of New Zealand is an expert in poultry and meat products.

He said that before consumption the meat has to be fully cooked with no pink parts and that the eggs also should be properly cooked. Statistics shows that in the last decade poultry meat consumption has increased significantly because of the high quality of amino acids, vitamins and minerals with low fat.
