If you have been crying fowl all these days and devouring every bit of the Flu news, here is something, like a breath of fresh air. God’s Own Country , as recent as yesterday, has demonstrated a dare-chicken attitude, expressing their love of the bird delicacy – Flu or no flu. The Kerala Chicken Merchants’ Association threw a chicken bash, replete with various chicken dishes, at a hotel in Malappuram, Kerala. The party was open for all, and absolutely free for anybody to tuck in. The purpose of the party was to assuage people’s fear in eating chicken after the bird-flu outbreak.

The hotel was quite a scene with hundreds of people, mainly the youngsters, wanting to make the most of what is being offered. Chicken lovers from very far off place also made a beeline to tuck into the delicacy.

The state president of the association P K Kunhon ecstatically mentioned that nearly 5,000 kg of chicken was used to prepare the dishes. And even this was insufficient to feed the chicken starved mouths, as many returned home disappointed. Kunhon said “The overwhelming response to the programme shows that people are no longer apprehensive of the bird flu. The mela was organised to help bail out more than 4.5 lakh people in Kerala who do poultry business for their livelihood. In Malappuram district alone, 50 lakh kg of chicken and two crore eggs are being sold a month.”

An awareness camp was organized before the programme commenced and this had the presence of veterinary and health officials. Chicken farmers from Tamil Nadu and Kerala also attended the programme.
