Sleep Apnea Can Be Treated With Oral Devices

Obstructive sleep apnea and chronic snoring can be treated with mouth devices which aid breathing during sleep. This can be considered as a first-line treatment, according to the guidelines which have been published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Mouth Guards which are more commonly used for sports activities has been recommended as initial treatment.

The continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) may however have to be utilized in the case of severe symptoms, as its effectiveness is higher. When there is a temporary collapse of the throat’s soft tissues, the obstructive sleep apnea occurs. Unusually loud snoring is reported to be one among the symptoms of the condition. Sleep disruptions in the night result in sleepiness during the daytime.

The CRAP treatment is inclusive of wearing a facemask which delivers pressurized air which serves to keep the airways open while sleeping, but most people consider this treatment difficult. Bringing OSA under control is important as this may lead to consequences like blunting the mental sharpness during the daytime, which may also lead to accidents.

The cardiovascular system can also be harmed due to oxygen deprivation, which also contributes towards chances of a stroke, blood pressure, and heart diseases. Snoring can also lead to matrimonial problems, as the snoring of one person may disturb the sleep of another. This condition is more prevalent among middle aged and obese men.
