Comfortably Obese And Reluctant To Get Fit

by Medindia Content Team on Jan 9 2006 7:41 PM

A startling analysis from a Cancer Research UK Poll, conducted amongst 4000 people, of whom more than half of the people polled were overweight, has revealed that nearly 26% were obstinately holding on to their obesity, showing no inclination to shed the extra weight. Worse still, almost 75% of the pollers, scoffed at the obvious link between over-weight and major health problems, like cancer.

The Director of Cancer Information, at Cancer Research, United Kingdom, has expressed his concern about the apparent indifference of obese people to weight related health issues. The need of the hour is to educate people adequately about weight related problems and create awareness about lifestyle changes.

It was recognized that almost 87% of the pollers were obese and 32% were overweight, yet were ignorant of their weight category. It is now known that obesity is the cause of many cancers, namely, cancer of the bowel, kidney, esophagus and the stomach.
