Minister claims China's Epidemic Control System Improved

Chinese Minister of Health Gao Qiang said China has improved its capability to handle epidemic emergencies, both treatment and prevention.

The SARS epidemic in 2003 exposed the flaws in China's epidemic disease prevention and control system. The government took comprehensive steps to address them, he said.

After 27 billion yuan ($3.3 billion) of investment, by the end of 2005, the goal of an improved and comprehensive epidemic response system has basically been realized, he said.

The system had worked well in containing the recent bird flu outbreaks, he claimed, limiting the casualty and spread of the dreaded disease.
