Take a dose of brandy to stay healthy

Starting with the scientific yet poetic explanation in the words of Dr Johnson, "CLARET is the liquor for boys; port for men; but he who aspires to be a hero must drink brandy."

It underlines the health importance of brandy too. Drinking 30ml of brandy has the same antioxidant potential as the daily recommended dose of vitamin C. The study was conducted by the physics and chemistry departments at Monash University.

In the words of Gordon Troup from Monash's school of physics, "Vitamin C works in completely different ways - we're not saying give up your vitamin C and drink brandy, what we are saying is having both."

"In other words you'll get de-sludging of the arteries, it'll prevent strokes and it helps, by keeping the arteries open, [protect against] the onset of certain kinds of dementia," he said.

"We found one Australian brandy and its antioxidant action was quite low. "It wasn't as good and this tells [us] something about how the brandy might have been made. It had no copper signal," he said.

But Dr Troup warned Christmas revellers to maintain the golden rule of moderation, and said a shot of brandy should be included in the recommended limit of four standard drinks for men and two for women per day.

This could mean good news for all youth conscious people…hail the shot of brandy!
