Phenylpropanolamine (PPA),is a common ingredient found in many non-prescription cough and cold medications. Use of PPA-containing cough and cold remedies increased the risk of stroke by 23 percent. Dr.Ralph I. Horwitz, from Yale University's School of Medicine, says, "Case reports have linked exposure to PPA to the occurrence of hemorrhagic stroke."

A hemorrhagic stroke results when an artery wall ruptures and prevents blood flow to the heart and brain and causes paralysis.
