Researchers have reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism that excessive day time sleepiness may be due to depression, diabetes, obesity or smoking.

The study was conducted among 16,500 men and women between the age group of 20 to 100 years. Of the study group 8.7 percent of the individuals had problems of excessive daytime sleepiness.

Research report conclude that individuals with excessive day time sleepiness were strongly associated with depression, obesity, diabetes and smoking or metabolic factors than with sleep disordered breathing or sleep disruption. Depression was by far the most significant risk factor for excessive daytime sleepiness, as individuals with high depression had excessive sleep during day time three times more than others. Individuals with diabetes had more than two times more likely to report of excessive daytime sleepiness than those who did not have diabetes.

People younger than 30 years of age had excessive daytime sleepiness compared to other recruits. Smokers also faced the problem of excessive daytime sleepiness and these smokers use excessive smoking to overcome the daytime drowsiness.
