A Move To Help Commercial Sex Workers Quit Their Business

by Medindia Content Team on Aug 20 2005 2:50 PM

The Tamil Nadu AIDS Initiative (TAI) will soon begin training sex workers in the state to seek alternative employment. The move has been accelerated following the provision of $12.7 million for the project to be implemented in five years.

The decision to train sex workers on an alternative employment scheme has been taken up after the representatives of sex workers recommended that they be trained in setting up fast food outlets, video filming and photography, computer skills and housekeeping. It was also recommended that sex workers should be allowed to mould programmes according to their requirements.

The TAI advocates who have been working on HIV/AIDS control indirectly will now help in alternative employment and skill development by arranging bank loans and setting up small businesses for sex workers. This initiative is hoped to help the sex workers quit the flesh trade on their own and to improve their standard of living.
