Sedation dentistry: a new way to overcome fear of dentists

by Medindia Content Team on Jul 4 2005 4:48 PM

If fear of dentists has kept you away from making an appointment with your dentists, then the solution to that may be closer to you than how you’ve thought before. New advancement in dentistry can cause painless dental procedures with the help of sedation dentistry. Now you can get all your dental work done while being comfortably seated and sedated at the chair of the dentists.

The process of dental sedation is done through sedating the patient by a sedative pill an hour before the dental procedure can take place. Other than sedative pills, dentists can also use nitrous oxide or intravenous injection to sedate the patient. The patient however will not be totally unconscious but will be not able to feel pain or remember anything. The sedation dentist will be monitoring the patient’s vital signs so as to maintain the safe level of sedation during the entire dentistry procedure. The length of sedation will be dependent on the length of the dental procedure and may be controlled as per requirements.

The dentists who have brought out the practice of sedation dentistry hope that this process will be able to alleviate the problems of people who had been avoiding dentist appointments out of fear.
