Women may have less tolerance to alcohol intakes than men, suggests a research report made public at the Digestive Disease Week 2005.
Researchers of University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine had said that drinking alcohol within limits might mean different things to women than their male counterparts. Women may be more at risk of liver injury from alcohol consumption than men even if they have the same amount of the drink.
Researchers had used animal models to analyze the difference in the extent of injury to liver between males and females from chronic alcohol consumption with two diets with different carbohydrate and fatty acid content. The first diet had fish oil while the second one had mixture of vegetable oils.
Alcohol induced liver injuries may range from mild to severe, like fat buildup in liver cells, alcoholic hepatitis due to liver inflammation, cirrhosis of the liver etc. researchers used bacterial translocation and blood endotoxin levels in rats to decide on the degree of injury to the liver and intestines.
Results of the study show that female rats that had alcohol along with low carbohydrate and high fat diet with fish oils had more risk of liver inflammation than others. This points out that women should be more cautious in deciding on the amount of alcohol to drink, as they are more susceptible to liver injuries.
