In a study trying to find out the relationship between dietary pattern and pancreatic cancer, scientists had conducted observations of 585 confirmed cases of pancreatic cancer and 4779 healthy people in Canada.
The cancer that starts in the pancreas is pancreatic cancer and it spreads through the lymphatic system of the body. Till date only certain factors like smoking etc had been known to increase the risk of the pancreatic cancer. The new study had tried to establish dietary preferences that may cause higher risk for pancreatic cancer in an attempt to isolate the main reasons for the disease.
The dietary patterns were taken as three types: Western dietary pattern that consists of high intake of processed meats, refined grains and potatoes, sweets and desserts; fruits and vegetables that consists of high intake of various fresh fruits and cruciferous vegetables; and, drinker that consists of high intake of liquor, wine and beer.
The results were adjusted for education, age, physical activity, smoking, BMI, total calorie intake etc. the reports suggested an astonishing 49% less risk of pancreatic cancer for the people following the dietary preference of fruits and vegetables. There were no significant relationships between the other two dietary preference and pancreatic cancer.
The study is published in the International Journal of Cancer.
