A new device has now been developed, which makes the process of providing artificial respiration to critically ill and comatose patients almost risk-free.

The device, called Percutaneous Tracheostomy Kit would be used in the precutaneous procedure which involves giving artificial respiration to critically ill patients.

In the operation an opening is made in the wall of the trachea, the passage leading to the lungs, to pass a tube. This procedure needs to be done accurately as even a slight diversion can puncture the oesophagus, which is a part of the food pipe. This will result in conditions like septicimia and pneumonia say the Scientists.Such anomalies can cause contamination of the lungs by contents of the food pipe and may prove fatal.

The Tracheostomy kit minimizes the risk as it has a dilation scale which allows physicians to know accurately how big a hole they are making.
