by Medindia Content Team on Aug 13 2001 11:37 AM

A ribozyme, an enzyme that can be used to kill the deadly Hepatitis E virus has been designed by Indian scientists. The ribozyme had been designed using the viral clones and would kill the virus by cutting RNA.

The efficacy of the ribozyme was being tested on animals. The cloned virus could also be used for diagnostic purposes to detect the presence of Hepatitis E virus.

For this, the team had produced recombinant viral proteins which could be used to generate an antigen-antibody reaction, that can be detected during tests. They also added that the formation on the viral genome could also be used to create drugs for the disease.
