The idea that here will be no monthly bleeding in women or menstruation may come as welcome relief to many women. But there are still many women who believe it to be the symbol of fertility and would not like to change this aspect of normal healthy life.

This has created a major uproar in the health world resulting in the FDA’s confusion in giving its approval for the new pill called Lybrel. This pill is designed to eliminate periods as long as the women took it. It does not seem to have any side effects attached to it. But the women are perturbed about trying this new pill.

As Christine Hitchcock, a researcher at the University of British Columbia puts it “My concern is that the menstrual cycle is an outward sign of something that's going on hormonally in the body but the idea that you can turn your body on and off like a tap is sure worrying”.

Though there are pills in the market to stop period for short while it has not been very successful as not many women are ready to bring about this change in their body functioning.

The doctors are of the view that women taking birth control pills need not bleed the fact that they do bleed is not true period. They also opine that the new pill needs to research to finds its long term effects.

It has incited heated debates around the country. Giovanna Chesler, University of California at San Diego, is of the opinion that “Women are not sick, they don't need to control their periods for 30 or 40 years.” the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research, a scientific organization that studies the medicine and social science of menses says that more research is needed before women can make the apt choice. br>
The stopping of the monthly cycle could have some adverse affects on the body functionings, as the same hormones affect the brains too. Period is also seen as a spiritual and a natural process.

The stopping of period is not a new concept. Women who take oral contraceptives do not have real periods. The bleeding that takes place is due the buildup of the uterine lining. Drug maker Barr had introduced new pill called seasonale by which the women had period only once every three months. The sales only dented a small segment. The new pill lyberl is expected to have great sales as it would be launched with aggressive marketing.
